December 12, 2016 The city of San Francisco is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, and it isn’t hard to see why. Lush, photogenic and blessed with a rich historical legacy, the Magic City has seduced visitors for generations. But without a local guide, a new arrival to San Francisco can easily miss some of our city’s finest points. With that in mind, and in the spirit of welcome, we’ve put together a brief visitor’s guide to the best of San Francisco. Transportation: Navigating San Francisco Of course, the first thing you’ll need to know is how to get around, and the good news is San Francisco boasts one of the best public transit systems in America: between BART, MUNI and our iconic cable cars, you can get just about anywhere. Here’s an important tip: if you don’t already have it, download the Lyft rideshare app. The service is well established here, fast and easy to use. And if it’s your first time using Lyft, you can get $50 off your first 10 rides here. If you’re flying into San Francisco or Oakland airport, it’s easy to take BART directly into the city (at SFO the station is in the International Terminal, and at OAK it’s in Terminal 1; just look for the signs). To see schedules and a handy route planner, you can visit the BART website here. SFMTA also offers visitor passes that are good on all MUNI buses, cable cars, and streetcars. To get yours, click here. (MUNI tip: to make the rear bus doors open, just step down.) Of course, everybody knows about our world-famous Cable Cars, and indeed they are a must-see. But be sure not to miss our unique streetcar lines: running the length of the waterfront on the Embarcadero and up Market Street, they use repurposed vintage streetcars shipped in from all over the world.
